On 24th of April the GWP Day has been organised in cooperation with the Serbian Chamber of Commerce (PKS). Around 70 visitors and participants were present in this first instiututional market approach of GWP, represented by C.E.O Ms von Lonski and Head of Regional Section SEE Ms Dr. Heike Burghard. On behalf of Serbia very high ranking representatives of different Ministries and State Agencies gave insight in the actual situation of the Serbian water sector and the challanges for future development.
During this sector event the cooperation between the city of Kragujevac and TCC Danubius was signed and capacity building measures in the premises of the utility of Kragujevac are planned in the near future. In order to intensify the relations and to get an impression of operational reality of Serbian utilities, on the following day Ms Burghard as C.E.O of TCC Danubius organised a site visit, co-financed by a grant of the Minsitry of Baden Württemberg, to one of the few existing WWTPs of Serbia. With a bus the group of both German and Serbian participants went to Subotica. After the introduction and presentation of the utility of Subotica, the idea of neighbourhood meetings as to German DWA approach was presented and discussed as a low cost model for experience exchange and improvement of the sector. After this theoretical part the tour over the waste water plant took place, guided by the technical Director of the utility Mr Pizurica.
Due to the financial situation of the utility and the economic restraints, maintenance is a daily challange to be solved. Mr Pizurica finally received some valueable advice from a German collegue how to reduce the energy consumption on the plant decisively. However the adaptation of the water and waste water tariffs in Serbia need to be a top priority in the near future because the utlities give an essential service to the communities and without the coverage of the expenses the infrastructure deteriorates in only few years, because of a lack of adequate maintnance and repair during operation!
Looking forward to further activities in Serbia and hoping that the political leaders of the country adopt soon the necessary changes in tariff policy. Dr. Heike Burghard
